The Akita Inu - Is this breed for you?
The Akita is a remarkable combination of Dignity, courage and good nature. It is the largest of several Japanese breeds of similar type, Standing between 24 - 30 inches at the shoulder and weighing up to 100 pounds.|
The Akita is a national treasure of Japan and a symbol of good health.The original breeding of the Akita was used as a hunting companion for large game such as Elk, wild boar and the ferocious Yezo Bear.An interesting charatarestic of the Akita is that they will hunt silently and even when provocked to fight will not give a warning or a growl.
The Akita is also a good hunting companion for smaller game and fowl and will retrieve with the tender mouth which they have.
The Akita seems to resemble some artic breeds such as the chow chow, malamute,siberian husky and samoyed (bear in mind only the resemblance)
The Spitz type ears and tail are very similar but the Akita is believed to have originated back to the Artic type hunting dogs of Eurasion Tribes. Skeletons of dogs unearthed and reconstructed some 6,000yrs ago bear some resemblance to the Akita, The Skeletons were dug from old burial mounds dating back to the new stone age ( less than 400 years ago)
As the years went by the Akita was then used as a police dog for the Japanese Military, now later today all over the world the Akita has become an excellent family pet and guard and is also well knowen in the show world.
The Akita is large powerful and alert with much substance and heavy bone.
The Akita is naturally silent only barking if it feels the need, the Natural temperament can be said to be 50% Gentleness 25% Aggresiveness and the remaining 25% like a peice of dough that the owner can mould to his/her own liking.
If there was one word that could describe the Akita overall, That word would be DIGNIFIED.
Never have you had so much fun and laughter, having the hunting instinct the Akita will chase birds round your back yard stalking them like a lion after it's prey but failing every time to catch any.
The Akita sheds twice a year so a good vacumme cleaner is a must between these times.The love they have for water which they will prove to you by using their water bowl as the local swimming hole.
The Akita is not a one man dog, But definitly prefers their close associates than strangers. the typical characteristics of the Akita is there endless cuiousity, when particularly affectionate he will gently carry the owners arm or hand around mouthing it and to his other animal companions will give little love nibbles.
